I went up from the West country, as did quite a few other stalwart WRN women – there seemed to be women from many parts of the country.
Getting a quick coffee near the Ministry of Health, it was great seeing other women wearing purple and green, and the Scottish ’terf tartan’ scarves. We all said hello and went together to join the demo. There was a fairly small number of opposition demonstrators who had taken the spot directly outside the building, alongside protesters highlighting the pro-Palestine hunger strikers. But the area on the opposite side of the road was a square, with a stage set for speakers and already filling up.
It was a good tempered, very mixed crowd, and a succession of excellent speakers – Kate Barker from LGB Alliance, Rosie Duffield MP, Helen Joyce, and a blistering contribution from Dennis Kavanah of LGBA. Speakers too from Transgender Trend, and all the political parties (although, unlike the other parties, no Green and Lib Dem MPs). The MPs arrived later from the House of Commons and in the meantime, Mr. Menno and Julia Long kept us singing specially adapted ditties, it was fun and very friendly.
LGB Alliance posters, leaflets and banners ‘Gay Teens Aren’t Sick’ were everywhere. Banners at the front ‘Standing with the Darlington Nurses (I think some of them were there), and variations on ‘Stop/Block the Puberty Blocker Trial’ and ‘Woman, Adult Human Female’. Claire Fox and Venice Allen did a sterling job of hosting and ensuring it all happened.
Some women took their banners and went to stand opposite the trans activist protestors. The police made sure we were kept separate and, after a complaint made them take down a poster which read ‘Arm Trans Kids’.
I saw later that a woman who was trying to make a video of both sides couldn’t get a single one of them to speak – masked and anonymous they seemed, rightly, ashamed of themselves. There were probably about 20 of them, hundreds of us.
Note to self: get purple and green knitted beret and scarf for winter demos!
